WOW Gympie…. you did great!
Official ticket sales, plus a few last-minute walk-in folks saw us just 1 seat short of selling out the Gympie Cinema 150 seat theatre!
With the amazing cool, calm and collected GDLC volunteers, Coral and Janet ably assisted by junior volunteers Hamish & Jonte the throng of attendees were whizzed through the doors, gifted with their plant vouchers and mostly seated before 6.50 and our first ever Gympie & District Landcare film event started showing at 7pm.
Promptly at 6.50 Jo Garret from Facebook page Zero Waste Gympie and local Plastic Free July advocate gave a brief presentation, noting some of our sponsors for the evening. These included Katek fertiliser for the very generous lucky door prizes….4 x buckets of awesome pelletised chook manure fertiliser, Gympie Rural & Regional Women’s Network for kindly covering the value of the plant vouchers that all attendees received and Farmer and Sun for the handy ‘forever’ cup & straw set. Jo’s kind words were followed up with a welcome and thank you from our GDLG President Maree Gillott.
The Australian film 2040 covers a wide range of topics. Including micro solar electricity grids in India and the profoundly positive effect this is having on the communities working together to build them. Also fascinating was the marine permaculture. A deceptively simple concept aimed at cooling open ocean waters, increasing the cycling of nutrients in these spaces and also providing habitat for marine creatures of many kinds.
As a farmer and rural landholder, I was especially interested in the words from Australian farmer and these days soil building wizard, Colin Seis. Burnt out in the 1970’s Col was broke overnight and in desperation tried a new way of cropping which is now gaining attention the world over.
So many positive stories and such a multitude of changes we can all make on a day to day basis, presented in an easy to understand format.
If you missed the showing of this film, well I’m sure in time you’ll catch up with online. But do keep your eyes peeled…. We have another film in our sights for later in the year, but clearly you need to be quick to grab your seats!
