News from The Koala Action Gympie Region Team

On 12 February 2022, the conservation status of koalas in NSW, Qld and the ACT was up listed from vulnerable to endangered status under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).

The Government accepted the assessment of the Threatened Species Scientific Committee, after several conservation groups forwarded a nomination for the endangered listing in the wake of the devastating loss of koalas and habitats in the 2019-2020 bushfires.

You can really contribute to the understanding and monitoring of our koala populations by reporting koala sightings in Gympie Council’s WILDWATCH application at www.gympie.qld.gov.au/wildwatch

We invite readers to read the tips on our website www.kagr.org.au, follow on Facebook, and collect our Brochure and Glovebox Guide.
Importantly let’s all consider how to improve habitat and create more koala-safe neighbourhoods where our koalas can breed and move safely.
If you would like to do a significant habitat project, and could use support via free trees, go to our website’s Habitat page and complete the expression of interest form.
